Volcanic Ridge Hike - August 2005

Collapsed log cabin near Minaret Mine.

One of collapsed log cabins near the Minaret Mine, at the foot of Volcanic Ridge. The mine saw its most active development in the late 1920s, when it was believed that Minaret Mine would be a rich source of lead-silver ore. Read more about the mine in old newspaper articles.

Storage cabin, Minaret Mine.

Minaret Mine's storage building. The door was pulled out by vandals (or bears?). We nailed it back on (below) to protect interior of the cabin. Lot of old equipment was still in and around the storage cabin in the summer of 2005.

In the late 1960s, a minister had a mining claim at Minaret Mine and used the site and old buildings as a summer camp for his church.

Cabin at Minaret Mine.

Remnants of the Minaret Mine. After a brief rest here, we continued uphill, and soon had to put our crampons on, in order to climb a permanent snow field leading to the top.

Mt. Ritter (center) and Banner Peak (right) from the top of Volcanic Ridge. A tin can (lower left corner of the picture) contains the peak's register. Only a few visitors signed up in 2005. Several days later, we climbed Banner Peak. In 2008, I made a solo ascent of Mount Ritter.
