Matterhorn Peak (Sawtooth Ridge, Sierra Nevada) — September 14, 2010
Day hike from Twin Lakes
(12279 ft / 3743 m)

This was an eleven-hours solo hike from Twin Lakes to the summit of Matterhorn Peak and back. I used the southeast slope of the mountain from Horse Creek Pass. Just below the top I caught up with another party, which was camping somewhere near the headwaters of the Horse Creek, and we continued over a short and simple class-3 section to the summit ridge together. Days in mid September are still long, and there was plenty of time for me to get back to the trailhead in daylight, and back to the Bay Area the same evening.
