Minarets Hike - September 1-3, 2006

minaret lake

Sep 1: Climbing a chute that leads to the summit of the Volcanic Ridge. Minaret Lake (9,793 ft, 2985 m) is in the background. Our camp site is in a group of trees on the peninsula in the middle of the picture. A small marshy lake (middle right) apparently has no name.

south notch

Sep 2: Plenty of soft snow in the midday on the east side of the South Notch. However, the apex of the snow field is solidly frozen, and ice axe and crampons are obligatory on the top part.

Amphitheater Lake and Michael Minaret, on the west side of the South Notch pass.

starr minaret

Starr Minaret (right) from the route to Amphitheater Lake. This is allegedly a class-2 approach to Starr Minaret (northwest slope), but we didn't have time to try the ascent.

clyde minaret

Back on the east side of the notch we can see the impressive Southeast Face of Clyde Minaret. Two climbers are rappelling down from the top, but the resolution of the photo is not good enough to see them.

Sep 3: Early morning view from Minaret Lake. From left to right:
Pridham Minaret, Kehrlein Minaret, Ken Minaret, and Clyde Minaret.

It appears that the top of Pridham Minaret
(left) could be reached relatively easy
   from the Kehrlein/Pridham saddle.
