The British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery is pleased to announce that the full text of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British Volume) is available online.

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, British Volume, is published by The British Editorial Society of Bone and Joint Surgery, a registered charity (No. 209299). The Society was established with the object of: 'The advancement and improvement of education in orthopaedic surgery and allied branches of surgery and the diffusion of knowledge of new and improved methods of teaching and practising orthopaedic surgery in all its branches'. In addition to its main activity of publishing the Journal, the Society provides production and publishing services to EFORT, gives donations to support Travelling Fellows and national and international meetings, and publishes a small number of books.

The British Volume of the Journal was first published in February 1948, following discussions between the already established American Volume of JBJS, the AOA, the AAOS and the BOA, and uses the title The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery with the permission of the American Volume. The two volumes are editorially and financially independent, but cooperate in areas such as advertising, selling subscriptions, attending exhibitions and in the publication of the subscription CD-ROM/DVD-R.

The British Volume, with the American Volume, is the official publication of the:
American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons   American Orthopaedic Association   Australian Orthopaedic Association   British Orthopaedic Association   British Orthopaedic Research Society   Canadian Orthopaedic Association   Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society   Eastern Orthopaedic Association   European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and   Traumatology - EFORT   European Orthopaedic Research Society   Irish Orthopaedic Association   Mid-America Orthopaedic Association   New Zealand Orthopaedic Association   South African Orthopaedic Association   Western Orthopaedic Association

The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (British Volume) Online contains the full content of each issue of the journal, including all figures and tables, beginning with the January 2005 issue (Volume 87-B, Issue 1). The full text is searchable by keyword, and the cited references include hyperlinks to Medline and ISI and to the online full text of many other HighWire-hosted and CrossRef journals. Abstracts, Tables of Contents and PDF files are available beginning in January 1996 (Volume 78-B, Issue 1).

Each issue will be placed online approximately on the date it is mailed to subscribers; therefore the online site will be available prior to receipt of your paper copy. Online readers may want to sign up for the eTOC (electronic Table of Contents) service, which will deliver each new issue's table of contents via email. The web site also provides access to information about the journal (such as Instructions to Authors, the Editorial Board, and subscription information).

Access to the full text of articles will be available by institutional license, which comes with all institutional subscriptions, or by individual subscription available to print or disc subscribers or by Pay per view. All other access (e.g., to Abstracts, eTOCs, searching, Instructions to Authors) will remain freely available.

In addition, the new site will provide other features that most will already be familiar with from HighWire:

  - Comprehensive search facilities across HighWire and PubMed journals
  - Toll-free reference linking to other HighWire journals
  - Personalized Cite-Track research alerting
  - Electronic correspondence
  - New free online-only articles
  - Improved facilities for the Orthopaedic Proceedings Supplement

The site is being produced in conjunction with Stanford University's HighWire Press, which also works with other medical and research journals, including these frequently-cited journals: The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (American Volume), BMJ, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Radiology, The New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA.
